Whistler Hike Ideas

August is a great time of year to hike in Whistler and we have some great Whistler hike ideas to share! Much of the snow has melted away making some of the higher elevations more easily accessible. We love to hike and explore our West Coast mountains. Here are some of our faves…
- Rainbow Falls Loop – let’s start with one of the easiest hikes we’ve experienced in Whistler! This beginner but beautiful loop is only just over 2 km long, takes the average person about 1.5 hours, and takes you through the forest to a gorgeous waterfall on route.
- Cheakamus Lake Trail – a must do! This hike is another easy and flat hike in, hike out trail along the breathtaking Cheakamus Lake. It’s 16 km in length roundtrip and will take about 4-5 hours. The colours of the water are so brilliant, we completely fell in love! A day pass is required to hike the Cheakamus Lake Trail between June 13th and September 1st so visit bcparks.ca if you plan on visiting during that period of time.
- Joffre Lakes Hike – this is a multi-lakes super scenic hike north of Whistler. It’s 4.5 km roundtrip and has some fun ups and downs in the elevation which would classify it as more moderate, but most of this is between the first and second lake. It’s hard to put a time on this one because stopping at each lake to sit and enjoy the views is an absolute must. Again, a day pass is required for this hike so be sure to visit bcparks.ca if you plan on visiting in the summer months.
- Whistler Blackcomb Mountain hikes – there are over 50 km of alpine trails to explore up the mountain. If you’re a strong hiker and feeling like a real challenge you can skip the gondola and hike the 6.8 km from the Village to Whistler’s summit. You can expect this to take anywhere from 3-6 hours. Once there, one of our top trails is the High Note trail from the top of the Peak Chair that offers views of Black Tusk and Cheakamus Lake. While you’re up there, and if you don’t mind heights, try the Sky Bridge! If you’re not embarking on the hike up to the summit then Gondola tickets can be purchased in Skiers Plaza in Whistler Village right at the Gondola base.
- There are too many great hikes to share! Some honourable mentions (that are more walks than hikes but so scenic) definitely include: Whistler’s Valley Trail system that winds all over the Resort for walkers, runners and bikers, Shannon Falls which includes a short riverside trail to the base of that waterfall and is just south of Squamish on route to Whistler, and lastly, Brandywine Falls, another short and easy walk through the forest just before Whistler that spits you out at a waterfall.
If you have a great hike to share we would love to hear from you, so we can add it to our bucket list!
